Weigh the wax, watch the temperature, let it cure.
Soy wax flakes, pre-tabbed wicks, fragrance oil, heat-safe jars, a pouring jug and a thermometer. A full kit is cheaper than assembling this from scratch the first time.
An electric melter is optional. A jug in a saucepan of water is enough.
Melt the wax slowly. Add dye if you want colour. Cool to the temperature on your fragrance oil, then stir the oil in thoroughly.
Stick the wick in the centre of the jar, pour, and hold the wick upright while it sets. Trim to about 5mm before the first burn.
Fragrance added too hot or too cold, not enough oil, or burning the candle the same day. Most soy candles need a few days to cure for a proper scent throw.

Dedicated melter so you are not hovering over a saucepan.
Purpose-made oils with a stronger throw than most essential oils.
