Embroidery for beginners

Buy a stamped or pre-printed kit with a hoop, needles and thread included. You stitch over the design instead of transferring a pattern.

If you prefer counting squares, start with a small cross stitch kit on 14-count Aida.

Running stitch, back stitch, satin stitch, stem stitch and the French knot. Those five cover flowers, lettering and most modern hoop kits.

Split the floss. Patterns usually want two or three strands, not the full six.

Good light, a firm hoop and a needle minder. Tension should be taut but not drum-tight enough to warp the fabric.
